Collar related accidents occur all the time. Collars become embedded in pets' necks because they outgrow them. Dogs getting caught on fences result in strangulation issues. Picture it -- your dog likes to play outside, so you tie its leash to the porch rail and go about your business assuming your dog is safe. A rabbit then zips across the yard and instinctively your dog jumps off the porch to chase it. Minutes later you find your dog hanged. People fail to recognize the potential danger of a collar. Some of the hazards include a leash being attached to a deck, porch or platform that does not allow the dog to reach the ground if the dog jumps off. There is also the possibility of a jaw or tooth of one dog becoming stuck in the collar of another. Actually, I personally know of a couple that lost when of their dogs when one unintentionally killed her playmate in just this manner. Also, there is the possibility of a dog either gagging or getting a leg stuck in a collar that is too loose. Collar related accidents can be avoided or at least minimized. If not in a fenced area the dog's leash should be secured to an object on the ground, not a deck, porch or platform. Also, choke collars should be avoided and a collars of supervised confined dogs should be removed while they play. Anything dangling from a collar just be avoided as they can become snagged on decks, fences and vents. Necessary precautions can save your dogs' life.
